DEADLINE: Where were you when you found out about the nomination?
Set the scene for us.
Raul Romo
DOMINGO:I always wake up around five in the morning.
I have a beautiful fireplace in my bedroom, and I had my coffee in hand.
Then I heard my name, and I couldnt have been happier.
Have you been able to congratulate everyone yet?
How amazing is it that all of you are nominated?
And that was beautiful.
Im excited that were in the conversation, whether thats Lenny Kravitz and his original song forRustin… Thats what I always believed.
Its like one cant do this alone.
I feel like were all a part of it, so we all win.
So, its so great.
Im so excited for them as well, especially Danielle Brooks.
I said, keep that courageous heart and forge your own path.
Shes one of my sisters in this business, and Im proud shes being amplified, too.
You know what I mean?
So, Im really happy and proud of my leading ladies.
Whats the importance of bringing this character to light and then getting nominated for playing him?
DOMINGO:I feel like the more Im amplified for this work, the more hes amplified.
This story is about somebody whos been completely marginalized and pretty much erased from history books.
Its like you get to right the wrongs of history and be a part of it.
Hes truly an American hero, and so I get to be a part of that.
It feels phenomenal, and I dont know, it really makes me feel great.
DEADLINE: Youre such a multi-hyphenate person, from directing, producing, writing and acting.
I bring it all to be a part of the collective.
I was like, oh, wow.
They do live in the same timeframe, which is fascinating.
And the fact that it lives through me is great.
It means everything to me.
Thats what Ive given a lot of my career to.
Im interested in showing all of that in the most complex versions of them possible.
DEADLINE: I have to ask because social media wants to know.
Did they let you keep the teeth you used on set?
DOMINGO:Yes, absolutely.
They didnt even let me keep the teeth [laughs].
I demanded to keep the teeth.
I went to my makeup trailer and said, Those teeth are coming home with me.
And they said, Not only those teeth, but your backup teeth.
DEADLINE: What would you like voters and audiences to consider while watchingRustin?
Thats what Id want people to consider.
