Scorsese saidMean Streetswas filmed in 1972 and first presented to audiences in 1973.

At that point, he said, The only way we saw movies was on the big screen.

Youd be like, Whats going on in this thing, he said.

It was cut down to 45 minutes.

Wright promptly moved forward toTaxi Driver, Scorseses first collaboration with writer Paul Schrader.

Scorsese described his time making the feature as a major fight.

They asked me to leave around 1978/79.

And not just because of the filmmaking, he said of Hollywoods response to him.

We were younger, and I was going through teenage rebellion at the age of 27.

I didnt want to be the last line of defense, Scorsese said.

I dont know where cinema is gonna go.

Why does it have to be the same as it was in the last 90-100 years?

Do we prefer whats been happening for the last 90 years?

I do but Im old.

Younger people are gonna see the world in a different way.

It would have given us a sense of freedom, he said.

Scorseses latest filmKiller Of The Flower Moonscreens this evening at the London Film Festival.

Starring are his frequent collaborators, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, alongside newcomer Lily Gladstone.

We had to take the script and rip it inside out.

And we did it until the last day of shooting, he said.
