SonyandLegendaryannounced on Wednesday afternoon that their live-actionStreet Fighterfilm, based on the classic video games from Capcom, has been dated for release in theaters on March 20, 2026.

News of the release date comes shortly after word that Danny and Michael Philippou, the Australian twin brother filmmakers best known for their A24 horror breakoutTalk to Me, have exited as directors of the project.

Details as to the plot of the film adaptation are under wraps, but given todays news, it’s possible for you to expect that well be hearing about a new director for this hot IP-based project sometime soon.

Legendary announced its acquisition of live-action film and TV rights toStreet Fighter, one of the most iconic and influential series in the history of video games, in April 2023.

The games revolve around an international martial arts tournament where fighters from around the world compete to prove their strength and abilities.

The franchise gained massive popularity with the release ofStreet Fighter IIin 1991, which introduced revolutionary mechanics such as combo attacks and special moves, and greatly influenced arcade and home console gaming.

Subsequent titles have expanded the games universe, introducing new characters, complex storylines, and enhanced graphics and gameplay mechanics.

Since the franchises launch in 1987, more than 49 million units have been sold worldwide, makingStreet Fighterone of the most well-known and highest-grossing franchises of all time.

The most recent installment,Street Fighter 6, was released on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X | S, and PC via Steam last June.

Previously, the games have also inspired films likeStreet Fighter, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, andStreet Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.
