They are two of my favorite characters.

I also just love that song.

But also, obviously Delicate is important to me, too.

WGA West building in Hollywood

Thats one of my favorite Taylor Swift songs.

How did you decide on that song for that scene?

When I read her script, I thought it was a perfect usage of [the song].

Last season, you debuted several Taylor re-records.

Its one of my favorite songs of all time.

How did you land on that one for the funeral scene?

I felt really strongly about it.

I felt like it really scored the whole scene and the level of emotion that it gets to.

I think its timeless.

Its kind of like everybodys song…its a classic.

HAN:It was already having it, because ofDaisy Jones & The Six!

You guys cant blame me for that.

Also, I was just smiling because the people I saw saying it were like, 16 years old.

They were like, This is my song.

Im gatekeeping this song.

I was like, this song was out before you were born.

That was somebody elses before it was yours.

HAN:Theres something so raw and powerful about that song.

Thats why I love to write coming-of-age stories.

So a song like that just screams to your soul.

Can you talk more about that scene?

But then to also be happy that all these amazing things are happening.

Thats what we really want to just show throughout the season.

Its good to see, I think, all of our characters have been able to keep living.

How do you determine what youll translate directly from the book and where youll change things up?

So I do my best to deliver those moments.

So they live within them.

Then I know the actors really well, so I know where theyre really going to shine.

I just knew that she was gonna really do something special with it.

They finally say all of these things to each other that theyve really been needing to let out.

That scene also came from the book, but how did you speak with Lola and Jackie about it?

Laurel is really mad.

She was mad at Belly that day, and shes mad at herself for being mad.

That is definitely an emotional scene.

I think it feels really real to me.

It feels like the kind of fight that you have with your mom.

And to me, it really speaks to how alone both of them are feeling.

He gets to be sort of the golden boy a bit.

DEADLINE: Im glad you brought up Steven.

I so enjoyed getting to see more of him this season, especially his relationship with Taylor.

That is a big expansion from the books.

What was it like to get to play with those characters and create their love story?

HAN:They are two of my favorite characters.

This was my plan for the second season, was for this to unfold.

Something I said to Sean and Rain was, these two characters really did grow up together.

For a character like Taylor, that is so tough, and she doesnt like to show weakness.

I said to [Rain], Steven is her Conrad.

Thats her first love.

I think people judge her really harshly for having that kiss with him when he was with somebody else.

But I think from Taylors point of view, she doesnt know anything really about Shayla.

She gets there and its like, Oh, hes talking to this girl.

She hasnt met this person, and she doesnt really know the full story.

In fact, they are still sort of in the talking stage.

It seems like Belly is starting to get some of her confidence and happiness back.

Why did you decide to end on that scene?
